CHINESE TABLETS MARKET RECORDS HIGHEST YoY GROWTH IN Q3 IN 2020 SINCE 2014.

IDC (International Data Corporation) released a report on the Chinese tablet market in the third quarter of 2020. According to it, OEMs managed to ship about 6.9 million units during this period, an increase of 21.7% year-on-year. Since 2014, the last quarter also set the highest year-on-year growth in a single quarter.

According to the report, the Chinese tablet market shipped 3.34 million traditional tablet computers and 3.57 million detachable tablet computers.

The former was down 11.6% year-on-year, while the latter was up 87.9% year-on-year. However, although the market has witnessed the highest year-on-year growth in years, the brand cannot meet the demand. In the third quarter of 2020, retailers generally adopted the “out of stock” approach.

This is because, with the termination of large-scale purchases in the commercial market, supply chain issues will only stabilize before the end of the year.

In other words, as people continue to work and receive education at home, this barrier is expected to be eliminated again in the second half of the first quarter of 2021. But this will reach equilibrium again in the second half of 2021.

In addition, according to the report, the commercial tablet PC market shipped 1.62 million units, a year-on-year increase of 29.5%.

This is the result of the government census project and the education industry achieving peak shipment growth of 737% and 42.2% respectively. On the other hand, the consumer market shipped 5.28 million units, a year-on-year increase of 19.5%, but a month-on-month decrease of 5.9%.

When talking about the brand, Huawei leads the 37.7% market share with 2.6 million units shipped. The company achieved a year-on-year growth of 22.9%, but its future is uncertain due to the US ban.

In fact, the competition has caught up. Apple was so close to Huawei in the third quarter, with shipments of 2.59 million and a market share of 37.5%. The American technology giant’s revenue increased by 35 year-on-year.

Finally, Lenovo and Microsoft ranked third and fourth respectively, with market shares of 4.6% and 2.4%. The shipments of the two companies were 320,000 sets and 170,000 sets, an increase of 42.1% and 23.3% respectively.

Last but not least, the IDC report also pointed out that TCL’s global tablet PC market in the third quarter of 2020 grew by 290.1% year-on-year. This Chinese company has the fastest year-on-year growth among the world’s top ten OEMs.
