FUTURE NFC DEVICES WOULD BE ABLE TO WIRELESSLY CHARGE ACTIVE STYLUSES.

After announcing a partnership between the NFC Forum and the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI), future devices with NFC may gain the ability to wirelessly charge the active stylus.

By integrating the NFC Forum’s Wireless Charging Specification (WLC) into devices that comply with the USI standard, new features will become possible.

The charging specification was announced in May and it supports 1W wireless charging of small devices. Smart phones or tablets with NFC do not need to have a charging coil, because the NFC antenna can double as a charging coil.

Although 1W is absolutely low for wireless charging devices such as earbuds or smart watches (although the NFC Forum does call them devices that take advantage of new features), it is sufficient for smaller devices like stylus pens because of their size Much smaller battery.

According to XDA developers, the NFC communication link will control the power transfer, and the charging specification will use a basic frequency of 13.56 MHz.

The device will also be able to use two modes for charging: static mode (using a standard radio frequency and providing a fixed power output) and negotiation mode (using a higher radio frequency, but can cycle the power output from 0.25W to 0.5 to 0.75W to 1W ).

There is currently no information on when this feature can be expected to begin appearing in devices, but we hope to see this feature available in phones launched next year.

However, if most manufacturers think that using current NFC chips that do not support wireless charging, if they think that this is not an important feature added to the device, then we would not be surprised.
